Oakmont’s Unified Basketball team had their first game on Thursday, against Gardner High School. This game started quickly, and the scores took off even quicker!
Oakmont is a certified unified team, with an award for recognition from the Olympics.
This award was given because of the amount of inclusiveness Oakmont participates in. Such as Best Buddies, Unified sports, and Unified pep rallies.
Eric Dawley, Oakmont’s Athletic Director, said, “Since we started track and basketball, these two unified teams, it has changed the aspect of sports inclusivity, including the athletes and partners that are participating. We are proud of all the programs we offer, but these two are extremely special to us.”
Oakmont started Unified Teams with track and field in 2013 and then basketball in 2018.
Charles Pappas, Oakmont’s Unified Basketball coach said, “I am honored to coach such an inclusive and well-rounded group of students. To see the athletes on my team not only get a chance to compete against other schools, but also foster new relationships through the sport I love is what it’s all about.”
The game resulted in a loss for Oakmont, with the final score being 52-50.
