I too, am glad Jeanette Mcurdy´s mom died

By Amore Fannon

Based on the title Im Glad My Mom Died I know what everyone is thinking. Before you judge the title or what I am about to say, give me the benefit of the doubt. Not too long ago Nickelodeon Child Star Jeanette Mccurdy came out with a book titled Im Glad My Mom Died. The title is intriguing. I admit I was skeptical at first, because you know…who says that about their mother? After reading the book, it is safe to say the title of her book is well deserved. While reading Mcurdy´s book, you are intentionally made to feel uncomfortable. Her book goes into deep subjects like eating disorders, parental abuse, addiction, and child stardom.

The book makes its readers ask themselves questions that we typically wouldn’t, for instance, if we actually knew the way so many celebrities are being treated, let alone child stars, and the content that we watch, would we watch it?  Or, if child stars should even exist?. Even though Mccurdy´s book went on to win awards, this does not mean she didn’t receive backlash. Multiple articles were published bashing her for the ¨horrible¨ and ¨offensive¨ title of her book. However, this did not stop her from speaking her truth. When interviewed on the Drew Barrymore Show, she claimed, ¨I always knew I wanted the title to be I’m Glad My Mom Died.¨ when asked why, she responded, ¨I wanted something that would be bold and attention-grabbing, hopefully, people with a sense of humor would get.¨

I believe the title is important, worthwhile and gives the reader a strong feel of the book. I strongly recommend this book to everyone. I believe this book could really speak to a lot of people, reading this made me think about myself, my own issues, and the future of children in the entertainment industry.
