On October 26th, 2023, Oakmont’s very own Model UN Club respectfully discussed the topic of the Palestine and Israel crisis going on currently.
Before the discussion about the crisis going on, the club was asked to prepare themselves by researching their assigned country’s perspective on the action happening in the Middle East.
In an after-school session about a dozen Oakmont students came together for the UN Club to discuss the conflict going on between Palestine and Israel. The conflict is partially over territory, religion, and rampant violence. The Model UN made sure to be very respectful with our debate because we realize many people are dying, and we haven’t lived through the events so it isn’t our place to speak on the topic harshly.
The debate went smoothly, as everyone came to a compromise on how we – portraying our countries – would solve this conflict. We decided to agree to stop the violence going on and release all the hostages taken. None of us in the discussion were too fond of the brutality happening. We also decided to declare that Palestine would get back some of its original land and determined that Jerusalem would become a territory for people to worship and practice their religion.
The debate was hosted by chairs, Abby Ruscoe and Sara Curran, and advised by the great Mr. Altobelli. They did a great job hosting the debate and presenting us with more knowledge on this topic.
“Everyone seemed very knowledgeable about the sensitive topic. We were able to come to a sensible agreement while still being able to have the staple arguments of a Model UN debate.” -Abby Ruscoe (debate chair)
Our discussion was very well-thought-out and I’d say a successful one!
