Another Holiday Concert has come and gone, however this year was one of the most memorable yet. A new tradition was born, where alumni chorus members were invited to perform with the current Concert and Select Choir students. While the alumni band members have been coming back to play for decades, this year was the first for the choir.
Not only was it great for a new tradition to be born, it was extra special for Principal Jeffery Lizotte and former band director from 1964-2000, John Blackwell, to be up on stage performing with the current band and choir members.
The concert was opened by the Concert Choir, who performed Boogie Woogie Holiday, Candle in the Night, Dashing Through the Snow, and Christmas… In About Three Minutes.
Next on stage was the Select Choir, who sang pieces We Three Kings, The First Noel, Mary, Did You Know?, and The Twelve Days After Christmas for their first performance of the school year.
After the Select Choir was finished, the students in Concert Choir were invited back on stage as well as any alumni in the audience, to perform The Winter’s Night and Carol of the Bells. There were about 50 singers on the stage, all alumni or current members of the Oakmont music program.
Next up was the Jazz Band, also their first performance of the ‘23-’24 school year. They performed Dashing Through the Snow!, Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree, A Holly Jolly Christmas, and A Chili Pepper Christmas.
Ending off the night was the Concert Band, who performed Herald the Holidays, A Carmen Christmas, and A Christmas Carol.
Once the Concert Band was finished with their pieces, yet again alumni were invited from the audience to come perform Sleigh Ride and the piece that always finishes off the night: A Christmas Festival.
The Holiday Concert is always the perfect send off to the Holiday Break and is certainly the favorite concert for many. The next opportunity to see the Oakmont Music Department perform is March 7, 2024 for their Winter Concert, where there will be even more ensembles performing!
