The question of whether or not we should have a snow day the night before one is called is always a controversial topic. Some parents will say there’s no need for one and others will encourage it. I’m pretty sure I can speak for most students when I say that the most relieving feeling is finding out you have a snow day the night before, or even the day of. A good portion of students will look at the Snow Day Calculator which probably isn’t the most reliable source to find out whether or not they’ll have school the next day, but the excitement of seeing a percentage over 70 is a good feeling.
Personally, I think snow days are great because it gives you a little extra break during the middle of the school year, which can be a hard time for a lot of kids knowing that the school year is only half way through. But by the end of the year, making up those days is something that everyone does complain about when the year gets extended into the summer.
Another big thing about snow days is whether the severity of the snow or ice should result in a cancellation of school. This can be super inconvenient for parents with young kids in elementary school that can’t take the day off to watch their kids, especially when school gets canceled the morning of, which leaves them no time to find someone to babysit. For high school students, it can be dangerous having to drive in the condition of icy roads, especially with new drivers. Overall, snow days can be inconvenient to many people but a lot safer for others. It’s not something that can necessarily be controlled or avoided but everyone has their opinions on them.
