On Friday, May 10th, Oakmonts Concert Choir, Select Choir, Concert Band, and Jazz Band attended Great East Music Festival and came home with some amazing awards. All the singers and musicians got to the school bright and early at 5:45 AM ready to compete. Here they received their matching shirts and loaded up the bus as they got ready for the 1 ½ hour bus ride to Springfield. When they arrived at the MassMutual Cultural Center they unloaded the bus and warmed up.
The first ensemble up was the Concert Choir, who performed a few songs they had previously sung this year, Louder Than Words, Stars, and Dancing Through Life. After they finished the judges gave them a quick workshop and then presented them with a Gold award.
The next ensemble up was Oakmonts Select Choir who sang Can’t Help Falling in Love, Baba Yetu, and Somewhere. After their quick workshop, they were also presented with a Gold award.
After the choirs were done performing, everyone moved to the instrumental room where the Concert Band started warming up. After performing their setlist including By The Rivers of Babylon, Benediction, and Suite of African American Spirituals, the Concert Band received a Platinum award.
Jazz Band finished off all the performances by playing their competition charts, Lady Bird, A Kiss From You, and Barnburner. After their workshop, the Jazz Band was presented with a Platinum award.
The musicians then packed up the bus again and rode to Six Flags! The talented group of students then spent the rest of the day riding rides and making memories. Congratulations to these hardworking students!
