We got the opportunity to see an early preview of the second Beetlejuice movie, also known as “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice”, Tuesday, Sept 3rd at the AMC Theatres near Boston Common. We were very excited to see the show and report a spoiler-free review to ensure viewers could see if the sequel of the popular 1988 movie Beetlejuice would be their type of movie.
Firstly, we would like to talk about the AMC theater on the Boston Common. We were invited by Allied Media and had the help of Headliners of Education to get us free tickets and VIP seats for the show. The seats were very comfortable and people were decked out in their costumes and outfits. We even got to meet Beetlejuice himself and his assistant, Bob
There was an array of snacks and drinks and even full-blown meals for sale – ones that looked like they tasted good, which is nice for a movie theater. It was also a fun experience with lots of themed decorations and drinks. Overall, a great time and atmosphere that really geared us up for the new film. Now for the spoiler-free review: The movie itself was incredible. Tim Burton, the producer of the movie had a unique que use of special effects rather than CGI to help it keep up that charm the original had. We initially were worried it would be a CGI fest and wouldn’t have the same vibe as the original. And while it was very much modernized, it had that cheesy special effect feeling that added to the visual humor.
The characters felt very close to the original as well, we thought the direction they took the characters was very well done. We got to see alot more character from Delia, in the original she didn’t have much outlying characteristics but shes alot more fleshed out in this movie. We also like the direction they took with Lydias character, it feels like a realistic direction with her abilities and how they affect her life.
Beetlejuice himself was basically untouched. It feels like the writers did everything to keep his original entertaining character intact. Micheal Keaton returns to play the character and has the same energy he did in the 80s. He’s still as funny as ever making us laugh with his memorable lines and gags.I loved him from beginning to end.
We can’t really get into the story without spoiling anything. But we think although sometimes it felt a little unfocused, it had great pacing and there was never a dull moment. It really grabs your attention and holds on. And the world building on the original was great, which we think any great squeal should do. And it never relies too much on the stuff from the original. The humor was also on point, so many great visual gags. Not to mention the great soundtrack, and the use of the song MacArther Park gave us chills.
Overall the movie was incredible, we think it was a worthy sequel and any big fan of the original will also love this one.
