Found Heaven by Conan Gray is an album I’ve been keeping up with since the first single came out. It’s easily my most anticipated release this year. The singles were all so good, with the catchy fun 80s vibe that “Never Ending Song” introduced us to, the beautifully emotional “Winner”, the singles alone became some of my most listened-to Conan tracks. And then on April 5th of this year after much anticipation, it was finally released. This album has a very much 80s vibe and is generally very upbeat compared to his last two albums. The album is addicting to listen to over and over, I’ve listened to this album almost every day since its release. It’s by no means Conans’ best album but its the most fun to listen to. I don’t go back to Superache because as much as I view it as his magnum opus and think it’s an emotional masterpiece, it’s too much for me to go back to super often.
Anyway let’s talk about the individual tracks themselves, in my opinion, this is the most consistently good Conan Gray album. It doesn’t have the greatest highs but it has almost no lows. (Keep in mind when I say the meaning it’s based on nothing by my own personal analysis of the lyrics and not anything confirmed).
Track 1- Found Heaven
This is a very strong start. This song is simply beautiful. I absolutely adore this track. It tackles themes of religious trauma and finding love. Its chorus has this very bizarre but beautiful echo after the lines and it makes me feel so good to listen to. The verses have that 80s vibe as the rest of the album and introduce this sound so elegantly, as it doesn’t delve too deep and doesn’t hit you too hard. It’s themes of religious trauma are very front and center in the chorus, and it’s about leaving that trauma in the past and finding love, and therefore, finding heaven. 10/10
Track 2- Never Ending Song
This is the first track we ever heard from this album. This is personally the perfect song to show someone the vibe of this album. It’s a super fun and enjoyable listen. And although it has an upbeat and fun sound, the lyrics aren’t so. This song is about being haunted by a relationship and feeling like it never ends but wanting something out of it so bad. And by not being happy being in this relationship it feels like it never truly ends. 8.5/10
Track 3- Fainted Love
This is yet another fun 80s-themed banger. Like most tracks on this album, it has a fun upbeat sound with sad more traditional Conan Gray lyrics. This song has a very similar theme to “Never Ending Song”, it’s about being in a relationship because you are desperate for any love at all. Staying in the relationship because very little love is better than none at all. 9/10
Track 4- Lonely Dancers
This was yet another single that showed off this album’s sound very well. It has a gorgeous music video that fits the music so incredibly well, feeling very 80s. On an unrelated note, this album reminds me of when season 3 of Stranger Things came out and gives me this sting of nostalgia for that time, and this song in particular gives me that a lot. Anyway, this song is about finding comfort in other people who are single or are going through a bad breakup. And I’d say it does a pretty good job at that. 8/10
Track 5- Alley Rose
This song was written right after Conan was broken up with and therefore is a breakup song. Again it has that 80s sound, but this song also has single-handedly one of Conan’s best bridges. This was a good single, although it was released very shortly before the album so I barely even remember it as a single. But it was the song that made me the most hyped up for the album. 8/10
Track 6- The Final Fight
This song is supposed to be a message to an ex. It’s about wanting that final fight with someone that would provide a true sense of closure. He wants them to know the pain he truly felt because of them, and he never got to express it before. And although I love the story and themes of this song, I find the song itself kinda boring. It’s by no means bad it’s just not a song I go back to often unless I’m listening to the full album. 6.5/10
Track 7- Miss You
Miss You is a breakup song with an interesting perspective, it’s about being the one to break up but later regretting it and realizing it wasn’t their fault. It’s about regretting breaking someone’s heart and hurting them when it was all out of their control. Although if I’m being totally honest, this is the weakest on the album when it comes to the music itself. Like sure it has great gut-wrenching lyrics, but when you’re listening it doesn’t really hit me at all and it’s overall kind of a boring listen to me. 6/10
Track 8- Bourgeoisieses
A catchy, fun, and upbeat track. It’s about being lower class and wanting to experience the life and carefreeness of the upper class. I really don’t have too much to say about this song, it’s great but kinda blends into other songs for me. 7/10
Track 9- Forever With Me
This is easily one of my favorite songs on this album. It’s another song with an interesting perspective of a breakup. It’s about reminiscing on a breakup, acknowledging that they hurt each other but being able to move on. It has that powerful emotional punch to it that I love Superache for. But it also adds to the theme of this album of finding inner peace and being able to move on. 10/10
Track 10- Eye of the Night
This track is yet another absolute banger, this song is a really powerful and fun listen. The beat and vocal work on this track is absolutely incredible. It’s about feeling like you are being watched or followed, this is most likely a metaphor for being haunted by your past, whether it be a relationship or childhood trauma. Which is pretty on point with what this album is trying to convey. 10/10
Track 11- Boys and Girls
Now this was easily my least favorite song on first listen. I thought it was kinda annoying and repetitive. But now that I’ve listened to the album a lot the song has definitely grown on me. This song also very much wears its influences on its sleeve, other songs sound similar to older songs but this one in particular sounds VERY similar. But anyway, this song is about how crushing on someone who’s so hot that everybody else crushes on. It’s pretty good and I vibe with it. 7.5/10
Track 12- Killing me
This was the single that made me realize just how good this album was gonna be. It was released at the perfect time, on Halloween. It’s a track that uses the metaphor of killing someone literally and comparing it to killing someone mentally. And it is an absolute BANGER. It’s perfect to me, the sound and vibe of this one just really works for me. I also feel like this track is super underrated, I often see people put this one middle to low on rankings and it kinda flopped when it came out as a single. But it personally gives me goosebumps and is one of my favorites on the album. 10/10
Track 13- Winner
This is my favorite song on this album right now. It’s emotionally the most hard-hitting. It was incredible as a single, but now that it’s the final track on the album, it’s somehow even better. It ties up almost everything about the album and is the perfect closer. It’s easily the best song lyrically, and I consider it to be on the same level as the best songs from Superache. If you wanna listen to anything from this album, listen to Winner. 10/10
So those were my thoughts on Found Heaven. I recommend this album to anyone reading this. It’s easily my favorite album to be released this year and is yet another masterpiece in Conan Grays’s ever-growing discography. I love this album and it was probably my favorite rollout I’ve experienced. So go listen to this if you haven’t already.
