In order to have a fulfilled fall, Halloween movie nights are a must! Who doesn’t love cozying up on a chilly fall day, and enjoying a spooky film? I know we certainly do! Using our expertise, we have compiled a list of the top six Halloween movies to put you in a festive mood this October!

Hocus Pocus: If you’re looking for a Halloween movie to get in the mood for this upcoming spooky season, Hocus Pocus might be the perfect watch. This classic is filled with comedic scenes and the perfect mild fright for the whole family to enjoy. In the year 1993, in the town of Salem, Massachusetts, this film revolves around high school student Max Dennison, who makes a thrilling discovery on Halloween night. He and his younger sister—Dani— just moved into town and he’s struggling to adjust to the new lifestyle. While out trick or treating, the two siblings take a quick trip to the old Sanderson sisters’ cottage, alongside Max’s classmate Allison.

The Sanderson sisters were a trio of fiendish witches who were executed back in the 1600’s. The only way to bring these evil sisters back to life is if a virgin lights the black flamed candle— located in their unwelcoming home. While Max is wandering the house, he makes the foolish mistake of lighting the candle, in disbelief that anything could go wrong. To his surprise, he does indeed resurrect the sisters and thus is forced to fight and defeat them before sunrise with the help of Dani, Allison, and their new furry friend Thackery Binx. I highly recommend giving this movie a watch!

Saw: If you’re someone who enjoys watching intensely gorey horror movies, then Saw may be the movie for you. Saw has a good combination of gore, terror, and solving complex puzzles. At the beginning of the movie, two men wake up in a large, dirty tiled bathroom. They’re both chained by their ankles to a corner of the room, a dead body between them, and no obvious, easy way out. The men’s names are Adam and Dr. Lawrence Gordon. They’ve been captured by the infamous man known as Jigsaw, who is known for his sadistic games.

Both Adam and Dr. Lawrence find a tape in their back pockets, and the dead body in the middle of the room holds a tape player. The two play their tapes quietly to themselves – one was ordered to kill for a promised escape, the other urged to survive – if they don’t comply with their instructions, both will die a slow death. Will both Adam and Dr. Lawrence escape Jigsaw? Or will they meet their timely demise?

Scream– The original Scream is considered a classic among many. For an older movie, the acting and cinematography beat expectations. Scream is a film about a masked killer who goes on a rampage in the small town of Woodsboro, California (a fictional place). The movie opens up to a scene with a teenager named Sidney. She gets a mysterious phone call from an unknown number. The man doesn’t reveal who he is but asks Sidney what her favorite scary movie is. The conversation soon turns sadistic, and the man threatens to kill her boyfriend —who is currently tied up in a chair on her patio — if she doesn’t give the correct answer to a trivia question. Sidney’s boyfriend ultimately bleeds to death at the hands of the masked killer, a man in a ghostly white mask and long black robe. Will Sidney find out who the masked killer is? Will the killer strike again? 

Ghostbusters– If you need a movie to watch with the family, the original Ghostbusters movie is perfect. It is filled with comedy and horror elements, making the classic great for older children and adults. This film follows three, later four, men through the ups and downs of running their ghost-catching business in New York City. After getting let go from their jobs, they decided to put their paranormal knowledge to work.

For the first few weeks, the men run around catching ghost after ghost, quickly building their fame. However, the government becomes concerned about the ghost storage’s effect on the environment and releases all of the ghosts back into the city. At the same time, the Ghostbusters encounter a portal to a different, evil dimension and must battle to save the world from being destroyed. Overall, this iconic movie is perfect for families and has just the right amount of spookiness to get you excited for Halloween.

Hubie Halloween– With Halloween quickly approaching, many people find it the perfect time to get cozy and relax with a fall movie. If you’re not the scary film type, Hubie Halloween may be an excellent option to add to your watchlist. This light-hearted comedy stars fan-favorite actor, Adam Sandler. Sandler plays Hubie Dubois — an unpopular, timid, middle-aged man, who has a passion for keeping his town safe.

On Halloween night, many spooky things are happening around Salem. From missing people to strange new neighbors causing Hubie to set aside his fears and investigate the odd occurrences. Along the way, Hubie gains newfound love, whilst facing many cruel pranks from his fellow townspeople. Give it a watch to discover how Hubie perseveres and saves Halloween night!

Halloweentown– Are you looking for the perfect movie to watch with the family? The classic, Halloweentown, is just what you need. In this movie, a young girl named Marnie and her siblings discover they come from a family of witches when they follow their grandmother to her hometown of Halloweentown. This magical town is filled with supernatural beings and stays separate from the human world.

On her 13th birthday, Marnie discovers that she too is a witch. When the town is threatened by evil forces, Marnie must work with her grandmother and family to save the town of creatures. This movie is a favorite of many and is perfect for kids. While it is made for children, people of all ages adore this classic.
