As always, Oakmont’s winter sports season is off to a promising start. Following the winter break, we stand over a month into what has already proven to be an exciting season. Let’s see where our Oakmont teams stand.
Our varsity girls’ basketball team has put on an impressive show during their first few games. With eight straight wins in a row, this team has shown inspiring unity and strength. Not only are they on a winning streak, but the scores have been shocking. The team’s second win against North Middlesex Regional High School ended in an incredible score of 66-12. With new coaching and young varsity talent, the team will surely have a successful season.
With 5 wins and 4 losses, the boys’ basketball team has had a very close start to their season. They came out strong with a win against North Middlesex. Recently, they came out on top against Nashoba Regional High School, ending in a score of 52-46. Sophomore captain Sonny Dellasanta is one of many great assets on the team, aside from his leadership as a captain, he repeatedly scores big to guide his team to a win.
With a record of 4-5, our boys’ ice hockey team has been putting up a great fight. However, the scores have been drastic. In their game against Minuteman, the Oakmont boys put together a winning score of 7-1. With 8 freshmen on the varsity roster, this year will be extremely effective in building a strong foundation for the next few years.
Now for our girls’ ice hockey team. Oakmont takes part in a co-op team with Leominster. They have maintained an extremely close record of 5-6, and have won their last two games. Senior Rachel Simkewicz has received a large amount of recognition as a leader for her team. The Worcester Telegram and Gazette published, “Oakmont’s Rachel Simkewicz has played a pivotal role on the ice for the Leominster girls’ hockey team…” Simkewicz is a large aspect to the team’s success.
Additionally, our indoor track team is continuously putting out great results. In the most recent meet at Fitchburg, 7 Oakmont participants took first place, and 31 placed in the top 10 of their event. This kind of performance is not out of the ordinary, these athletes are always putting in the effort it takes to bring home an Oakmont win.
Scores and rankings aside, each Oakmont game is sure to be a great one. Our athletes appreciate the ongoing support from the sidelines as we progress through the winter season. Make sure to continue to show up for their hard work, and to those athletes whose effort makes each game worth it, keep making Oakmont proud.
