Temu’s quality is not the greatest compared to others. According to CSIS News, Temu has bad quality because of how cheaply it is made and how little they pay the workers across the world. Temu pays its workers very little money, so their products often are terrible quality because of the low pay of their workers.
Oakmont senior, Dani Amoah says, “most of their clothing feels like it’s made with cheap polyester material.”
Temu has become one of the most popular websites, it has 30 million new downloads monthly because people want to buy things at way cheaper prices than full price for name brands. You can buy a Temu hoodie for 2 dollars instead of 50 dollars from named brands like Nike
Temu’s arrival times can vary. When you order a package from Temu, it states on the website that it should arrive to your door in 5-10 business days and the express 3-8 business days. Some people’s shipments often take far longer than 5-10 business days. Since Temu products are shipped from China, it can sometimes take up to 20 days to get your package.
Oakmont freshman Donovan O’Shaughnessy says, “The Temu shipping isn’t right and takes too long.”
According to Csis news, “In 2022 Colin Huang had an idea of an online shopping website called Temu. Temu has Been around for 3 years now and has been very successful for Huang. From 2022 Temu went from having 5.8 million dollars to 104.2 million dollars in April of 2023.”
Oakmont Regional business teacher Owen Napolitano states, “ The products are very low quality and I don’t support them because of their working conditions.”
Temu get viewers and customers from all over the world, not just the United States. According to Backlinko, “Temu has 292 monthly active users worldwide in 185.6 million users access Temu mobile app. The top 2 nations worldwide using Temu are the us and the United Kingdom. This news is surprising because Temu’s owner is Chinese.”
Older users are taking over Temu’s popularity. According to the Business Of Apps Temu’s average users are between the ages of 59 and older. While ages between 18 and 26 are the least likely to use the app, Additionally older users are typically less digitally savvy than the younger generations and more likely to order products that are of lesser quality and less expensive.
Users that are athletes are not using Temu as much as others. According to Express VPN, yes Temu is a popular site that you can shop from. But will their products help these athletes’ bodies? Temu sells at a trusted price, but since their quality is so low athletes tend to not purchase shoes, athletic tape, or braces because they are afraid their low quality would not prevent injury.
Oakmont freshman student athlete Anthony Chances mentioned, “The products are manufactured in a way that can’t be useful for us athletes and it might come with the wrong materials in it so that’s why I think I can trust Temu for products.”
Temu workers across the world are getting paid little to nothing. According to Quora, the reason Temu pays their workers such a low wage is because they sell their products below the market price, so if the product is below the market price that means that Temu cannot afford to pay their workers a higher salary. As reported by Glass Door, the pay rate for Temu workers is 3.8 stars for workers in the US. Quora also explains that a reason Chinese workers get paid so little is because China has a large manufacturing sector that relies on low-cost labor.
Temu is not the only website that sells cheap and low quality products. Semrush website claims that Shein.com, Aliexpress.com, and dhgate.com are Temu’s 3 biggest competitors. What do these different websites have in common with Temu? They are all similar to Temu in terms of their fast shipment, cheap prices, and poor quality. Ali Express has more downloads than all three of these websites and Ali Express has over 2.9 billion users all around the world compared to Temu’s 292 million users.
Oakmont senior Dom Donahue expressed, “I think Temu and ali express are similar because they both sell bad quality products for cheap prices.”
