There are some things you don’t see every day, maybe even every year, and that’s a broken record. But not just any record, but a record that no one thought could ever be broken. Not one hockey fan thought that Gretsky’s 894 goal record would be broken by anybody, but until Alex Ovechkin proved everyone wrong.
We reached out locally through the AshWest community to hear opinions about this historical day.
Eighth grader Jack Butler said,”It was an exciting moment and a memorable one.”
Sophomore Cushing forward Tristan Johnson said, ”I feel that this is one of the best moments of all time in hockey.”
Sophomore Raymond Colby put in quotes, saying ”Good Aim.”
Sophomore Connor Catalfamo said,” This is probably the most historical event in NHL history and I think Ovi will continue to raise the record of most goals scored in a career.”
Senior Logan Smith said,”Ovechkin is undoubtedly the greatest goal scorer of all time. He passed Gretzky’s career goals even when way fewer goals were scored in his period.
Smith continued to say, “It may seem that Gretzky had higher scoring seasons than Ovechkin, but if you do the math, you can see that Ovechkin’s 65 goals in 2007-2008 is equivalent to around 90 goals in the 80s, which is similar to Gretzky’s 92 goals in 1981-1982.”
But out of all the broken records there will be a record that will never be shattered, and that’s the record for most assists in a single career. At 1,963 assists, Gretsky’s holds a record that might never be broken. The closest person to even touching that record is Penguins Star Sidney Crosby, who is still 900 assists behind. But with only 2-3 seasons left until he retires, the record will most likely still be in-tact.
