A Lying Symphony
Matthew Cormier
The words are charged with passion and promise
They penetrate the soul like Cupid’s arrow to the heart
It crescendos to a captivating climax, emotions amassed
Relief,
Catharsis,
Let melodies melt the mind
See clear though blind
Ears wrought to a fine, silky white glitter
Worked to the bone by deceitful tone
Listen to them sing, and sing, and sing
Free from the fire of the incessant ire
What more could the heart require?
The music,
It calls
Like voices in the walls
The rotten, lying symphony was never there at all
Replay, replay
Repeat, repeat
In moment sullied through
Try to find an answer here is all that you can do
Dissect every word and study every phrase
Play it once again
Go through it all in vain
It entices, it lures, it promises
That there lives an answer among these melodies
And though their great gleam penetrates the final fog of forgiveness screaming
“Join us!” these feelings never last forever, endless struggles repeat evermore
Like a broken record, an ouroboros dwelling in its infinite overlapping coils;
Trembling in cold, dark, silent turmoil,
It leaves you wandering, a vagrant in a void
Alone once again in the absence of music to console, to comfort
You lift up the needle,
Move it back,
And restart the symphony once again.
