Growing Up
Savannah Stowell
A frilly red dress and wavy pigtails
Singing and dancing in the front yard
I am in a hurry to grow up
A big childish smile
Begging for attention
Excited and bubbly
Always running around
Doing lots of things wrong
But still happy
Plenty of naps
Nothing to worry about
Learning the alphabet
Hoping time will fly faster
To high school
Then college
And getting some cool science job
Being older and smarter
I’m still learning
At a slow pace
How it feels to be little
Grey sweatpants and messy hair
Working and studying late at night
I just want time to stop
Dark bags under the eyes
Wanting to be left alone
Nervous and introverted
Wanting a time to relax
Receiving good grades and awards
Yet somehow exhausted
Hardly any sleep
Lying awake at night
Dreading calculus
Wishing I could go back
To elementary school
Or preschool
And playing around at recess
Not worrying about rejection
I’m still learning
Way too fast
How it feels to grow up
