They say “Redbull gives you wings,” and others say “LIVE. FIT. GO.”
There are more than 190 energy drink brands on the market globally, and so many drink them. From kids playing sports, to teenagers in school, and adults in college or work!
From those 190 brands, two were put into perspective: Redbull and Alani. Let’s start with Redbull. Redbull was inspired by Functional Drinks in East Asia. Founder Dietrich Mateschitz had developed the new product on April 1st, 1987, right in Austria. That day was when a completely new category of drink was introduced- energy drinks.
With the new flavors coming out constantly, the bright colored cans, and their motto “Redbull gives you wings,” the industry quickly skyrocketed. They sold 12.670 billion cans as of 2025. With 111 mg of caffeine and 168 calories, the drink quickly energizes you.
Not only does Redbull produce energy drinks, but they also hold events where professionals do crazy things all around the world. That involves dirt bikes, helicopters, diving, etc. They call it Redbull TV, promoting the brand even more.
This made Redbull extremely popular. Newly hired math teacher at Oakmont Regional High School, Mr. Edward Loguidice claims, “I have seen lots of Redbull in the classroom from all my students.”
Now, Alani was introduced. The company, Alani Nu, had been bought out by Celsius, an also very popular energy drink company. The company was bought in 2025 for 1.8 billion dollars, and was founded in 2018 by influencer and entrepreneur Katy Hearn and her husband Haydn Scheneider.
With a wide variety, Alani isn’t just energy drinks; it is also known for its low-calorie supplements/products, unique flavors, and a huge selection of snacks and beverages.
Based on the teachers at ORHS, Alani has been one of the most popular energy drinks seen in and out of the classroom. According to Ms. Rachel Sinclair in the Math department, she claims, “I have seen mostly Alanis, especially the flavor Just Peachy. Although my friends prefer Redbull.”
Another big opinion from ORHS is that a lot of the teachers and students choose neither of the two. They either prefer not to drink any energy drinks at all or another brand of energy drink. Throughout the school, Monsters, Celsius, coffee, etc have been popular.
Mrs. Kathryn Bennitt from the Science department here at ORHS claims, “I haven’t noticed many drinks other than Celsius, although that is also my favorite. So there may be some bias there.”
True. Many Oakmont students have been seen with Alanis throughout the halls, classes and cafeteria. And some faculty would rather a Joe
Tech Ed department teacher, Mr. Gregory Secino claims, “I prefer a cup of black coffee in the morning, not for the caffeine but mainly for the taste. Although I have seen plenty of Monsters in the classroom.”
As the controversy continues on, the stats continue to grow too.
