Looking for volunteer hours for a club? Maybe just wanting to help out the local communities of central Massachusetts? Lucky for you, there’s an organization founded by one of Oakmont’s own students, Lily Harris, that’s helping people find volunteer hours that suit their interests and schedules nearby!
Local Hands is a nonprofit organization founded by Lily Harris, created to help people find volunteer opportunities all across Massachusetts. Joining her organization is easy; you fill out a form with your contact information, interests, available times, and then she sends you volunteer hours. Then, from there, she finds the perfect volunteer hours catered to you!
Her project first started to help out teenagers in Ashburnham, but has since spread to provide opportunities for everyone in our local area.
When asked why she started LocalHands, she said, “I started LocalHands to help Ashburnham specifically. I noticed a lack of volunteer options, so I created a system that not only connects teens with opportunities but also matches them based on their interests and schedules.” Volunteering with LocalHands guarantees that you can attend opportunities that fit into your schedule and also participate in events that you are passionate about.
Since LocalHands was started, members of the organization have worked with the Ashburnham Historical Society during the Celebrate Ashburnham street fair and have assisted many people in other surrounding towns. LocalHands has only recently started, and the organization plans to volunteer at a lot more places and events. The main goal of LocalHands is to help as many people and communities as they can.
So, what makes LocalHands worth choosing and volunteering for? Not only are volunteer hours required for a lot of clubs at Oakmont, but the volunteer work we do at LocalHands is so much more than just mandatory hours. It can help with your mental health, give you a better sense of purpose, and help you gain experience in fields you may be interested in. On top of all of that, it helps improve not only your community but the communities around you, too.
LocalHands is a really fantastic way to get involved with those volunteering opportunities, too. They can help you find places to volunteer near you that you might not have even known about. It’s a very welcoming organization full of great people who are very easy to get along with, and it fits right into everybody’s schedule. As someone who’s worked with LocalHands, I definitely recommend it.
