The crisp, cool, and fresh autumn air- it almost feels as if winter is coming, but no, it’s just October 31st.
Looking around, bright, colorful candy wrappers flood the streets, joy-filled giggles, and lastly, youthful smiles light up the dark but peaceful sky. The day that all children await- Halloween.
Dumping your huge sack of candy all over the kitchen floor, siblings fighting over who gets what, and your dad secretly swiping candy when you aren’t looking.
The itchiness of your costume, the magical face paint, and lastly, the class Halloween party.
Going to school in your costume, seeing teachers dressed up as your favorite movie characters, and getting to do all the fun activities. Halloween cookies, fun spooky word searches, and the Halloween-themed movie we watched at the end of the day.
Waiting to be dismissed from school, but the clock couldn’t move any slower.
The sugar rush that was on its way, staying up past my bedtime, and being able to see all of my friends, made it all worth it.
The wait is what made it all worth it. Waiting for 6 pm to roll around made my legs bounce out of pure excitement. Sleepless nights weeks in advance, battles between who gets the better costume, and lastly being able to walk down the street and see everyone’s faces I once knew, has changed into something completely unrecognizable.
Halloween was the only day I couldn’t recognize people, but when did that turn into everyday? The same kids I was once running around with to find houses with the biggest candy bars, the friends I could trust to hold my 10-pound candy bag, and lastly, my sister, who would always steal my candy. Those same familiar faces that are now partying, not dressing up, or hanging out with their significant other instead.
Even though we no longer dress up, trick or treat, or smile for the annual Halloween picture, the childhood memories that we all forget about sometimes are still right here.
