The Oscars 2024

This Sunday, at 7 pm, the famous Oscars started once again. With Jimmy Kimmel hosting for the fourth time, the film awards ceremony took place at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles.
Starting off strong with amazing red carpet appearances, viewers noticed celebrities such as Billie Eilish, Finneas, Ava DuVernay, Mark Ruffalo, and Ramy Youssef wearing a small red pin with the outline of a hand around a black heart. This pin represents a call for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hammas war, making these artists very brave for speaking out with this little symbol of peace.
Once the red carpet was over, Kimmel kicked off the night with jokes about his “half-standing ovation” and joking with Ryan Gosling.
This year, every acting category was announced by five former winners, which, although very heartfelt and feel-good, took quite a long time. They announced that Robert Downey JR won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in “Oppenheimer”, and Da’Vine Joy Rudolph won Best Supporting Actress for her role in “The Holdovers”. Then Cillian Murphy gained the Oscar for Best Actor in “Oppenheimer”, and Emma Stone as Best Actress in “Poor Things”.(Da’Vine Joy Rudolph)
Next up, “War is Over”; where soldiers from opposite sides of an alternate reality WWI, play an amusing game of chess, won the best animated film. And “The Boy and the Heron”; a heartfelt movie about a boy traveling to distant worlds to reunite with his mother, wins best animated feature (War is Over). (The Boy and the Heron)
During a quick break, awkward Oscar banter occurs between Octavia Spencer and Melissa McCarthy, lighting the mood with a few good laughs. Then the French mystery “Anatomy of the Fall” wins best original screenplay. Next, a story where a frustrated black novelist, fed up with the tired and offensive tropes that the entertainment industry profits from, writes his own offensive novel, getting to the root of the hypocrisy he despises, “American Fiction” wins best-adapted screenplay.
To give the award for Best Makeup and hairstyling, we get to see a fun Beetlejuice reunion between Catherine O’Hara and Michael Keaton, they announce that “Poor Things” won the Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. The best production design also went to “Poor Things”, giving them their second award of the night. Then once again “Poor Things” wins its 3rd Oscar of the night with Costume Design. Afterward, Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt joke about the rivalry between Barbie and Oppenheimer and agree that both films were key moments in this year’s box office success.
