The book series you’re missing out on

It is no secret that YA novels are immensely enjoyed by both teens and adults alike. Series like Harry Potter and The Hunger Games became well known phenomenons around the world. But many novels and series from the YA genre are overlooked. One such example is the Seven Realms Series by Cinda Williams Chima. This thrilling four book fantasy series creates a whole new magical world that many more readers should experience.

The point of view of the books transitions between two protagonists. One is Han Alister a poor ex thief, struggling to get by, who gets unexpectedly caught in the war between wizards, clans, and the common people. The other is heir to the throne Rasia, who faces many unexpected threats from all around her, on her journey to prevent a war that would tear the kingdom apart. Having different points of view allows readers to understand what is happening at a deeper level and allows many more interesting plots to be explored than when a book is seen from one person’s eyes.

Though the plot may sound ridiculously overdone, many aspects of the series set it apart in the best ways. Each book contains jaw dropping twists that keep the reader wanting more. Additionally, the plot is always moving, it never feels unbearably boring or dragged out. Some books containing various plots can be chaotic and impossible to read, but this is not the case for the Seven Realms series which has plots that are laid out clearly and intertwine effortlessly.

Another thing that makes the series so enjoyable is the characters. Though the main characters may sound stereotypical, they are actually complex and compelling characters that you want to root for as they grow throughout the series. The villains of the story are just as well written and escape the trope of being one dimensional monsters with no real or clear motive. Characters with smaller roles also exude personality that jumps off the pages.

Of course, there is no such thing as a perfect story. Just like most YA books, it is impossible to escape the over-the-top and eye roll inducing love story between the two main characters, not to mention the three love triangles that occur throughout the series. This may be an added bonus for some readers, but for those who don’t enjoy reading about longing gazes shared between two teens in love separated by circumstance, don’t worry. The romance plot is not as heavily focused on as it is in other series and more time is dedicated to actually trying to achieve the goals they set out.

On top of lovable characters and exciting plot, the series truly delivers when it comes to the ending. Every loose end is tied up with a satisfying conclusion, making you feel sad that it’s already over but overjoyed that you took the time to experience it. The Seven Realms series is truly a hidden gem tucked away in the corner of the YA section of the library.
