Remember when we were younger, during Christmas time? When the week before break was a huge Christmas party, with hot chocolate, snacks, and a movie? Cuddled up in our blankets all over the classroom, in our holiday PJs instead of a regular old spirit week filled with tests and quizzes.
The best part was Christmas Eve. Being so excited for Santa to come, sleep was hard to come by. Sneaking frosting from Santa’s cookies while making them, putting carrots out for Rudolph and the other reindeer, and opening presents from family members. Going to huge family gatherings and getting home late and tired with a stomach full of yummy food, filled with Christmas delights.
Decorating gingerbread houses and cookies, setting up the Christmas tree, with the biggest opinion on whether to have colorful lights or not. Arguing with your siblings over who gets to put the first ornament, and not to mention the star or angel on top of the tree. Decorating the whole house with the fire going in the background and the sound of the good ol’ “Jingle Bell Rock” tunneling through your ears.
Then comes the morning we all had been waiting for since the day after Halloween, Christmas Day! Waking up at the crack of dawn, sitting on top of the stairs, waiting for the okay to come down and see the presents Santa had given. The thrill of running down the stairs and seeing the colorful lights twinkle on the tree, hot cocoa ready, and most importantly, the perfectly wrapped presents with designs splattered all over.
Not even 10 minutes into tearing open the presents, there’s wrapping paper everywhere. Smiling as I opened my brand new Lalaloopsy dolls, Furbies, and Monster High Dolls, while my brother opened his brand new Legos, Hotwheels, and Bayblades. Always arguing over who gets to open what. The stockings are stuffed with heaps of candy, silly bands, and more.
After playing around with the presents, it’s time to get ready for Christmas lunch at a relative’s house…and then another relative’s for dinner. Huge feasts with ham, mashed potatoes, squash, buffalo chicken dip, you name it, and of course, the best for last, dessert! Brownies, gingerbread cookies, chocolate cream pie, etc, fill our stomachs.
By the time you get home and fall asleep, a wave of sadness comes over you. Wishing it could be Christmas all day, every day, but now you have to wait 365 more days.
