Thanksgiving— which could have multiple definitions, religious or not— is mostly known to have originated from the fall harvest celebrated by the Pilgrims in 1621. Although most people celebrate the holiday by giving thanks to family and friends.
‘The First Thanksgiving’ was established by a festival shared by both Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag people. Over time the tradition of the feast evolved, leading to states designating days to Thanksgiving. This led to 1863 President Abraham Lincoln declaring a national holiday for Thanksgiving set for the date of the fourth Thursday of November.
Throughout the years, many peoples’ beliefs and opinions on Thanksgiving began to vary. Whether or not it’s celebrating with family and friends, giving thanks to god, or to remember the Pilgrims which established this holiday.
But at the end of the day no matter your opinions, everyone celebrates the same thing, being grateful. Thanksgiving isn’t meant to separate people from each other if they have different opinions, because at the end of the day everybody is the same and family means more than some silly argument or opinion.
The holiday is usually gathered by loved ones for a large meal. Some people may even go to different events before sharing a meal with their family.
Thanksgiving is considered the best holiday by many reasons because it may just be the only day that is celebrated for giving thanks to family and friends, and expressing gratitude.
Traditions such as parades, football games, turkey trots, races/games, cooking and gathering for a feast all simply unite people together for holiday celebrations. These celebrations, traditions, and foods all connect people together. Especially people who don’t have a designated place to celebrate, which makes this holiday so special.
During these times some may be lonely, especially those who don’t celebrate or don’t have anyone to celebrate with. So having events that are planned by communities is really special for many people. Events like these don’t typically last the entire day but for people such as kids, teenagers and adults to get out of their house and do something fun with their community is amazing!
Holidays can be lonely, but it doesn’t have to be. Set a plan up for the holidays even if it’s by yourself, you may even have fun!
