What is an Angel Tree? An angel tree is typically located in a Walmart, Cumberland Farms, or a local YMCA, and it is run by The Salvation Army. On the trees, multiple families or children can be found who are less fortunate and cannot afford a Christmas. I think this tradition is so beautiful, and it truly captures the true meaning of Christmas. On the cards with the family or child’s name on it, it lists their age and the things that they wish for, and you go and purchase it for them for Christmas.
The History Behind It
The most well-known program is the one I previously mentioned, The Salvation Army. It began in 1979 in Lynchburg, Virginia, by Charles White. What struck this idea in Whites head was a childhood memory during the Great Depression. Whites mother had decorated a small tree with paper angels and listed names and ages of children and their gifts that were wanted. The neighbors would pick these so-called angels and purchase their gift for them. This was where this global tradition had begun.
A Teenager’s Experience With An Angel Tree
This Christmas, since I finally been working year-round, I heard the local YMCA in Fitchburg, where I worked previously, had one up in the main lobby. I went and picked a kid, and I had a 12-year-old boy who wished for multiple things. My friends and I all picked kids, and I can definitely say that I loved the experience. My friends and I will 100 percent be doing it next year. Now, a Senior from Oakmont also joined this tradition as well.
Senior, Cecelia Anderson stated, ¨I participated in an Angel Tree at my local Walmart, and I can say that it makes me happy to see a lot of kids getting what they deserve, and it makes me feel happy that I can share the Christmas magic with others.¨
To wrap up, I think Angel Trees are such a wonderful thing because this time of year, A lot of families struggle the most, and I think it is a great example of not only sharing the Christmas cheer but also giving to those who cannot.
