Just last year the Eagles were by far the most dominant team in the NFL. Running through teams and doing whatever they wanted. Last year having one of the most complete teams the NFL has ever seen, while adding a convincing 40-22 Super Bowl win over the Kansas City Chiefs.
Running back Saquon Barkley rushed the ball 345 times for over 2,000 yards. Quarterback Jalen Hurts had an impressive 103.7 passer rating, adding 18 passing touchdowns and 14 of his own on his feet. As well as the Eagles number one wide out A.J Brown adding 1,000 receiving yards.
The Eagles seemingly had it all, and with a loaded roster and only a few guys retiring or leaving the team had every right to go back to hoist the Lombardi. However, now we sit here after the first week of playoffs with the Eagles on vacation, with questions beginning to rise.
During Jalen Hurts tenure as the Eagles quarterback he has never had the same offensive coordinator for two years in a row. For those who do not know, different play calling every year for an NFL quarterback is insanely difficult, but Hurts has seemingly stayed solid.
As it seems from the outside, Hurts has been in MVP talks consistently, but the question arises has he really been putting together MVP seasons. The stats would tell you one thing – no.
Jalen Hurts has been an outstanding quarterback for the Eagles, but looking at his career stats he has simply not been elite. He’s been good, great even for this Eagles team, but it’s very difficult to give him the title of elite. Hurts has never had a season with over 4,000 passing yards, and in the season where he set his season passing record of 3,858 yards in 2023, he threw 15 interceptions and only 23 touchdown passes.
The Eagles have consistently put together amazing offenses with top 5 O-lines. A.J Brown has consistently been a top 15 wide receiver in the league with Devonta Smith also having wide receiver one upside. Now in these past two seasons you add a top 5 running back in Saquon Barkley and you truly have one of the best offenses in football.
Now this is not entirely a Jalen Hurts issue as he has proved the overrated narrative wrong a few times now, but it makes you wonder how good Hurts really is and could it be time to move on from Hurts. The Eagles have consistently had a top 5 defense taking almost all the pressure off of the Eagles offense.
But now it’s 2026 and the Eagles lose the wildcard to the injury ridden 49ers. Some notable injuries the 49ers suffered during this season include tight end George Kittle to an achilles tear, linebacker Fred Warner, wide receiver Ricky Pearsall, and a few other key players for this strung out 49ers squad.
With Hurts entering his 6th year now some uncomfortable questions need to be asked surrounding the future of the Eagles.
What’s next for A.J Brown? Will the team pivot offensive coordinators once more after yet another lackluster offensive season? What moves need to be made to make this team contenders again? Could it be time to hit the reset button with the team getting older?
