Headlines regarding the Superbowl are making their way to the public with this Sunday’s upcoming game. You would think Drake Maye is catching the eyes of the media, but the Super Bowl this year has become more than football and certainly more than the unpredictable outcome of this year’s game. The attention has turned towards, “The Bunny Bowl”.
Halftime shows are what football and non-football fans alike can enjoy about the Superbowl. The NFL reported, “According to Neilson, the audience peaked at 137.7 million in the second quarter.” This mentions the amount of people tuning in right before the halftime show last year during Super Bowl LIX- 137.7 million people!
In the past, artists have used the halftime show as an opportunity to regain or gain popularity, sponsor specific products, and overall, give fans a good experience. This year, the halftime show means more than that, especially for the Latino community.
Bad Bunny, a popular Latin artist, has made the headlines in his journey to performing at the halftime show. The artist started in the music industry around 2016; however, he has only just recently reached the spotlight internationally with his songs, “Titi Me Pregunto,” “ Baile Inolvidable,” and “DtMF.”
He is known as a very spirited, fun, and stylish performer, but one thing he has recently shown is his advocacy for his community.
In an NFL press release, mentioned on the ABC news channel, Bad Bunny stated, “ What I’m feeling goes beyond myself. It’s for those who came before me…this is for my people, my culture, and our history.”
As a Puerto Rican native, the artist has a deep connection for his community and for his people. He plans on representing the Latino community at this year’s halftime performance, and there is no better time than now, especially at a time when positivity in the community is crucial.
It is not an unknown fact that the Latino community has been through some serious struggles recently. With ICE raids and mass deportation, it’s no question that Bad Bunny has an opportunity to shed some light for his people.
In a study done by UCLA, it is seen that Latino communities have been negatively affected by the Trump presidency. “From February to April 2025, monthly arrests of Latinos nearly doubled relative to 2024, with an average increase of around 82% per month. Arrests in May 2025 partially reflect the target set by Stephen Miller, with an increase of 118%.
June 2025 experienced the full effect of that push, peaking with an increase of 253% year over year. Arrests declined in July 2025, due in part to increasing opposition from the public, court rulings against the administration, and overworked ICE staff.”
The presence ofICE has become a very controversial topic in the US, especially for those it directly concerns. At the 2026 Grammys, many people, such as Billie Eilish, Justin Bieber, and Lady Gaga, wore pins saying, “ICE OUT” in support of those affected by ICE. Based on the Grammys, we see that there are a whole lot of people to support the community and show that they are not alone. It’s one thing to see people who support, and a whole other moving and emotional thing to see someone represent and stand up for their people.
After accepting his Grammy for Best Musica Urbana Album, Bad Bunny walked up to the stage, took in the moment, and stated, “Before I give thanks to God, I’m going to say ICE out. We’re not savages, we’re not animals, we’re not aliens- we’re humans.”
It was a moment that gave people hope and perspective. The Puerto Rican defended his community and gave us a glimpse of what may be a historical moment during the Super Bowl.
The culture, experience, and community that this show will bring is beyond what people might think. To some, it’s just another halftime show, but Bad Bunny has shown that this show will make a mark in history.
During the previous presidencies, immigration was always a factor, whether it was made public or not. Donald Trump has made his opinion on immigration very clear. Immigration has been an issue in the US for years, with the first immigration law being passed in 1917 during WWI.
It’s no secret that past presidents have been deporting illegals; the only difference is that Trump has made his actions much more public and harsh compared to presidents past.
In an article written by Brookings, they explain that the Supreme Court allowed the ICE organization to “profile Americans” based on, “The type of location at which they were found, the type of job they appeared to work, whether they speak English or Spanish with an accent, their apparent race or ethnicity.”
Although the situation is unfortunate, we can expect Bad Bunny to put on quite the show at the Super Bowl. The excitement about not only him, but also the people he will bring out to support his cause.
I personally think that bringing out people such as Raul Alejandro, Cardi B, and Daddy Yankee would be amazing as they are not only representing Bad Bunny, but they have also shown to be advocates and inspirations.
In just a few days, Bad Bunny will be in his “Casita”, ready to take on the task of taking a stand. While some tune in to watch Drake Maye throw touchdowns, there will be a very diverse group to support him, especially his community. Music is what brings people together, no matter the language. So sit back, relax, and jam out to some Reggaeton.
