January 21st marks the start of our second semester of the 2025-2026 school year. Some might have crushed the first semester, accomplishing all the goals they had hoped for. Or it might have been a complete trainwreck. Either way, the second semester is upon us, giving some the chance to continue nailing it, and others to start anew. The start of a new semester is like a fresh start in the middle of the school year. For me, it feels like a second first day! Not many schools get to experience a complete schedule change as we do. It’s a chance at a fresh start, a way to improve what may have gone wrong during the first semester.
Every first day of school, my brain spins through all of the things that could go wrong. I was worried the first day would be too different or too weird. How much homework will there be? Am I going to be overwhelmed?
However, this is not the first day of school; this is just the start of a new semester. It’ll still take some time getting used to a new schedule, new teachers, and new classmates, but all the first-day jitters are gone. Let me remind you, the second semester means we’re halfway through the school year! Halfway towards summer and sleeping in! Starting the new semester gives us all a chance to start school positively, and with the right mindset, which may have pulled us back at the beginning of the year.
However, starting the second semester means forming new routines. Throughout the first semester, we all got comfortable with our schedule, picked out our favorite times of the day we always look forward to, and also found which classes maybe aren’t for us. Starting the new semester means we’re going to have to find new routines and grooves that push us through the day.
This means for me, instead of waking up to learn a new language, I’ll be starting off with some good old world history. From second lunch, I won’t have to make the trek from the cafeteria, all the way to the furthest class in the science wing‒Ms. Brown’s room. Being down in the chemistry wing wasn’t always the most convenient when trying to get to the locker room for after-school sports.
One of the positives of starting the second semester is ending my day in the English wing, from which I can much more easily get to the locker room. In fact, I won’t have to make a trip downstairs at all, having no math or science classes. This second semester will be challenging a different part of my brain than the first semester.
Starting the second semester comes with some great excitement, and also some worries. We all will have to adjust and become accustomed to whatever the new semester may bring. However, starting the second semester gives everyone a chance to start fresh, carry on, or brush off whatever we ended the first semester with. Myself included, everyone needs to keep an open mind as the first week is always challenging.
We need to remind ourselves that it will get better as it always does, going into something new. As the famous philosopher Alan Watts once said, “The only way to make sense of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.”
