There are so many ways to start your day on a healthy note. One of these is to eat a heart-healthy breakfast that will give you all the nutrients you need for the day. Or, it can be a meal that wakes you up when you’re feeling a little lazy.
In 2026, eating a healthy breakfast – even if it’s small – is becoming very popular. Even though there are many healthy breakfasts out there, some have become fast favorites.
Eggs are a very common breakfast food, especially on weekends or holidays when people have more time. Not only are they quick to make, but people can also eat them with toast or avocado, depending on their preference. According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, “Both egg whites and egg yolks contain high amounts of vitamins A, D and B, as well as nutrients such as zeaxanthin, choline and selenium and a healthy fatty acid called linoleic acid.”

However, you might not always have the time to make an egg, which is why healthy smoothies are a great alternative. Healthy smoothies can be just as filling as eggs, and they’re convenient if you’re in a hurry. According to EatingWell, “This high-protein orange-mango smoothie is a bright and refreshing drink that combines the tangy sweetness of fresh orange juice with the tropical richness of mangoes.”
Oakmont sophomore Abigail Smith gave her opinion on healthy smoothies for breakfast. “When I make smoothies, I end up putting a lot of fruits like apples and bananas. This helps me stay healthy and get the nutrients I need for the day.”
The third most popular breakfast food is a parfait. These parfaits give you the freedom to add healthy ingredients. The good news with this breakfast is that there are so many different types of parfaits that can accommodate different people. According to Healthline, “This recipe has 27g of protein and 3g of fiber per serving. It calls for just three ingredients: plums, Greek yogurt, and sliced almonds. Kiwi is a great addition to this parfait.”
Avocado is also a food that is loved by many and has multiple nutritional benefits. One of the healthy meals that incorporates this tasty addition is avocado toast with salmon. A benefit of this amazing breakfast meal is that it can be made for dinner during the week or brunch over the weekend. According to Crepes and Bows, “Avocado is incredibly nutritious – it’s often added to various dishes due to its good flavor and rich texture. Nowadays, avocado has become very popular among health-conscious people and is often referred to as a superfood…Salmon is the most amazing and most nutritious food out there. It is loaded with nutrients, it’s accessible, and you can make so many various dishes when cooking with salmon.”
Oats are another quick and convenient meal for breakfast, especially if you need something light yet healthy at the same time. Sometimes people don’t want to eat plain oats, which is why overnight protein oats are a great source of nutrients. There are also so many different types of overnight oats, which have great nutritional benefits. According to ELEAT, “What makes protein overnight oats stand out is their incredible nutritional balance. They pack a powerful combination of protein, fibre, and complex carbohydrates.”
Not eating breakfast can also have negative effects on your body, which is why having a meal in the morning is so important. After talking to Oakmont Nurse Jessica Heffernan, she shared that, “A poor breakfast can affect concentration and energy levels, causing fatigue, making it difficult to retain information during school. Sometimes it can also affect your mood, increasing irritability.”
Despite this, not everyone eats a healthy breakfast, and some people still feel fine throughout the day. Oakmont sophomore Juliette Rousseau said, “When I eat breakfast in the morning, it’s not always healthy. Even though I don’t always pack a healthy breakfast, I do pack some healthy snacks.”
It’s also important to keep in mind that not everyone eats breakfast for many different reasons. This doesn’t mean that they’re doing something wrong; it just means that they’re aware of how their body responds. Oakmont gym teacher Leanne Roy commented on this by saying, “I feel as if the simple answer would be yes. We know that food is fuel, and fueling your body to start the day has much support from the research world.
I have become much more aware that one size does not fit all. Some people don’t feel well when they eat in the morning, some people need to take medications that need to be on an empty stomach or with food, some people have medical issues that dictate when they can and can’t eat, and some people are into fasting. There could be so many other reasons to like religion. I guess what I am trying to say is, find what works for you. If you’re tired every day and hungry, you should eat a healthy breakfast to start your day. Getting to know your needs is a part of growing up. Listen to your body. It has a lot to say about how to keep you healthy.”
