For a moment, think back to what you were doing on the morning of Saturday May 2, 2026. Were you sleeping in late? Maybe you were just getting back from a run. Perhaps you were sipping on a cup of coffee. Well, now think of the first thing you saw when you opened up your social media. For many, it was the downfall of Spirit Airlines.
Wichita State University reports that Spirit Airlines began with a man named Ned Homefield in 1964 and his Michigan based company, “Clippart Trucking Company.” After ten years of service, the company switched to a ground carrier based service until 1983, when they became known as “Charter One.” This was the first time the company had flown guests to their destinations, with arrivals and departures featuring Detroit, Atlantic City, Las Vegas, and the Bahamas according to Spirit.com.
In 1992, the company officially rebranded itself to Spirit Airlines. The airline states on their website, “When we rebranded as Spirit Airlines, we doubled down on our mission: bringing more guests to more places for more fun.”
After three decades of delivering on their mission, Spirit Airlines has reached their final destination. At three o’clock, on Saturday May 2, 2026, the airline ceased all operations and declared bankruptcy. They now prepare for the lengthy liquidation process.
For passengers awaiting their flight, that meant vacation was cancelled, or not quite over yet. For those working for Spirit, the sudden change left them without a job and not even an hour’s notice.
According to CNBC, “…the company filed a cumulative wind-down budget of around $217 million,” with the number subject to change. They additionally report that the airline contained a total of 122 Airbus A320’s, 59 being in service and 63 in storage. The larger Airbus A320’s had 37 in service and 13 in storage. Out of all of those aircrafts, more than three-quarters of them were reported to be leased.
When speaking to Spirit Gold member Veronica Meneses, she shared her experience with the airline stating, “I always found flying with Spirit to be a good experience all around. Affordable, reliable, [and] good passenger experience.” She additionally shared that being a rewards member made her travel experience easier with free luggage options and priority boarding.
NBC News informed listeners that out of the many struggles that Spirit has endured since COVID-19, the war on Iran became the driving force behind their “sudden” halt. After failed mergers with companies such as Jet Blue, the airline was beginning to struggle.
The cost for jet fuel became an extra $100 million in addition to the debt that they already had. In February of 2026, the airline brought their situation to the White House, in hopes they would provide financial aid. Unfortunately, half a billion dollars doesn’t just magically appear, and because of that the company had to give a sudden and somber farewell.

“I felt like part of me died. I was grieving. I don’t think I’ve cried that much since my mom died,” said Ryan Seidel, Spirit flight attendant for 26 years, to Yahoo.
Spirit has always been the joke of all airlines to travelers, receiving comments that refer to their lack of cabin space, leg room, cheap flights and that their planes were not reliable.
After reviewing airline safety logs, it is safe to say that Spirit has never crashed in its 34 years of service. Though incidents were recorded, just like a car is bound to experience malfunction, so is a plane. In comparison to other airlines, skycop.com reports that American Airlines has recorded 11 accidents in its history of operation, and coincidentally, it’s not as bashed on as Spirit.
Meneses added, “The closing was not so much of a surprise since the company had been struggling for quite some time. I am disappointed and hoping that other airlines will take this opportunity to step-up and make traveling more affordable and enjoyable.”
The airline was known for their low-cost flights, wholesome staff, and their bright yellow aircraft, delivering reunions and memories for years. Those who were fond of the airline had fallen in love with the crew members and their kindness, as well as the amazing deals that they were able to receive.
The fall of Spirit Airlines has been a tragic incident that has touched many. Though it was unexpected, many saw it coming.
The memories made are something that many will carry with them. The landing claps, the amazing flight crew, and the safe trips will be cherished. It is unfair to let Spirit Airlines leave without a proper goodbye. To that, as the airline would say after their arrivals, “Welcome to (wherever they may be), and if this is home, welcome home.”
