Project Hail Mary is a film that was released on March 20, 2026. The film was based on the novel Project Hail Mary, written by Andy Weir, which received significant praise from critics and readers alike at its initial release in 2021.
The novel has been adapted into a film, directed by both Phil Lord and Chris Miller. With an overall budget of around two hundred million dollars, the film has grossed over three times their funding as of May 2025, according to ScreenRant.
The movie includes two main protagonists: Ryland Grace, played by Ryan Gosling, and Rocky, a space creature that resembles rocks. Grace is sent into space by humans on a mission dubbed “Hail Mary,” where he encounters Rocky searching for a way to remove astrophage, a sun-eating particle that threatens both of their homes. They then unite with the ultimate goal of searching for a different particle that can consume astrophage in order to save both of their planets.
The movie stands out from similar ones in the genre. Other prominent sci-fi films, such as Interstellar, focus more on the emotional distress of being in space and the hopelessness the journey brings.
However, Project Hail Mary chose a different path. They exchanged the more common, depressive tones for prominent themes of humor and light-hearted companionship between Grace and Rocky. This choice is highlighted when Rocky is introduced, as he turns out to be a comic relief character throughout the duration of the film.
This contrast is a welcome change in tone compared to the typical emotions sci-fi films cover. It makes the film more engaging for the audience while also adding a greater emotional appeal through the connection between Grace and Rocky.
Additionally, the quality of character development was extremely strong in this film. The movie is quite approachable for those who have not read the book, and gives enough context for the audience to understand the depth of the story. It also exemplifies how both Grace and Rocky accept and move beyond their past struggles, as well as motivates both to make decisions based on their future hope and new friendship.
The film also displayed the strong emotional connection that develops between Grace and Rocky. Their interactions and sacrifices for each other show how deep their bond has become, making their character arcs throughout the film more impactful to the overall story line.
Their connection also shows how Grace ultimately finds a new home where he can do the job he loves. Grace’s ultimate decision proves that he values his friendship with Rocky more than returning to a society that rejected him.
The quality of the sets was also particularly high in this film. There appeared to be minimal usage of green screen effects when possible, which gave life to the various locations. The most impressive feats were within the spaceship and how Rocky interacted with the different objects in this environment, giving further reality to the sets.
These dynamic sets made the movie cinematography stronger, as some shots were done to expertly convey the information the audience needs to fully grasp a scene. One scene in particular, where all of the Taumoeba is illuminated along with Grace, is one of the best-looking scenes I’ve watched in a live-action film.
Gosling’s performance as the main human protagonist was also done extremely well. He portrays the emotional struggle of someone trapped in the expanse of space perfectly, and also embodies the mental relief of meeting Rocky.
Gosling’s display of emotions enhances the connection between him and Rocky, as well as provides a common ground for both of their struggles.
However, while there were many positives to the film, there were also some limitations that have been addressed.
Even though the film provides some context, it does not completely explain the complexities of the story, which prevents the audience from fully understanding and appreciating the film’s plot. With the lack of context, some scenes were not fully developed, and the true depth of the story was not explored.
Particularly, the backstory of Grace and why he was selected for this mission remains ignored, and this caused a struggle to explain why he was selected.
Other than the lack of context, the movie was extremely high quality, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a new film to watch.
