On Saturday, March 12, the Oakmont student council traveled as a group of about twenty to a Massachusetts Association of Student Council State Conference. The conference was held at Worcester State University, where it included two keynote speakers, student-led workshops, roundtable discussions, and leadership training.

At 7:30 we departed from Oakmont and were on our way to Worcester State. As a council, we participated in energizers, listened to speakers talk about societal issues and positive perspectives. We attended a lunch and dinner that included lots of socialization with other councils. There were workshops throughout the day and we closed out with awards and goodbyes to the state delegates, where one of our own, Nicholas Goodchild was greeted by applause and cheering for his recognition of being on the state council. We finally capped off the day with a huge dance celebration and left Worcester State, ready to inspire our own school with new ideas and concepts.

Long-time Student Council adviser and Oakmont science teacher Mr. Dan Dufour appreciated his group and the conference. He said, “MASC is a time to celebrate the accomplishments of StuCo throughout the year. It’s a time to bond as a council, grow as leaders, and connect as a StuCo community in the State. It’s one of the most memorable times for a young leader.”

Personally, my experience at MASC state conferences was life-changing. I enjoyed my time, and it really changed my perspective on what I wanted to do with my career. Hearing everyone’s stories really made me think, and I am so thankful I was able to attend.
