Column: Losing your ‘comfort’ series – New Girl

By Reagan Bouchard

Have you ever lost your ‘comfort’ show? Well, I have. Let me tell you, it did NOT feel good. It feels like a large, devastating pit that contains only sadness and despair that can only be helped by the voice of your favorite characters.

If you don’t know what a ‘comfort’ show is, I’ll explain. It’s the show that never gets old, no matter what. It’s the show that contains the jokes you laugh at even when you have listened to them many times before. It’s the show that you pick if you think nothing will make you feel better. A ‘comfort’ show feels like a stress-free home for your mind to relax in.

When I need a pick-me-up, I automatically just turn on that one show I know will make me laugh. What happens if it isn’t there? Nothing good. It’ll leave me in a bad mood for who knows how long.

After a hard and dragged-out day, the only thing that I want to do is let every last brain cell wash away with the humor of my favorite ‘comfort’ show. Nothing hurt more than the pain I felt when I logged onto Netflix to see “leaving Netflix on April 9th” written next to my show.

Do you know the one and only New Girl show on Netflix? If you don’t, let me tell you about it. New Girl is about a girl who moves in with three roommates. It is the perfect mixture of humor and a little romance. All the characters are funny and have good stories. This is my ‘comfort’ show, or at least it was.

The show was taken off Netflix on April 9th, 2023. I know, outrageous! Now what will I watch? It won’t matter. There will be no show that will beat my original comfort show.

Now, after it was taken off Netflix, it costs money to watch the show. They are making me pay for happiness; that is unacceptable. There should not be a price, especially when it is 2-3 dollars an episode for a show that brings me joy and comfort.

The days pass without hearing or seeing the characters in New Girl. At first I was making it through, but then things like tests, fights, chores, and homework all came up. Usually, I de-stress myself by letting my heating blanket swallow me whole while New Girl blasts on the TV. Not anymore.

New Girl is coming out on Hulu and Peacock. However, I don’t have Hulu, and Peacock has ads every five seconds. It’ll have to make do because when I need some cheer in my life, New Girl may be the only thing to help me.

I laid on the couch while hopelessly scrolling through Netflix, trying to find something that I was in the mood to watch. I never had this problem before. If I didn’t know what to watch, I would just turn on my ‘comfort’ show. I continued to search until minutes just flew by—10… 20…30. I gave up and decided to take a nap instead.

Although, the nap was nice, it was no New Girl episode. I will forever need my ‘comfort’ show, and I don’t know what I will do now that it’s gone.
