Barbara’s Shredded Wheat: A Cereal Review

By Seth Loudon

I first learned of big wheat cereal from a friend here at Oakmont, Ben Landry. At first, I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. A giant frosted mini wheat? With no frosting?

I had to look up images online to confirm. What I saw shocked my eyes. Whole cereal bowls filled with only one or two giant pieces of straight wheat.

At first, I was just making fun of Ben for eating something so wacky. But as I looked at more images my curiosity grew. I knew I had to try one.

I drove down to Market Basket, the one in Athol because it’s the closest store that has supply. It was a 20-minute drive to get there, which put me off from going for a couple days. But eventually, I took the trek down there to get it.

And as I walked down the aisle full of all kinds of colorful boxes, I laid eyes upon it. Barbara’s Shredded Wheat.

The box had a list of facts on its side exclaiming all of the health benefits the cereal had. 0 grams of sugar, heart-healthy, an excellent source of fiber, and “kosher.” All this did was lower my already low expectations.

I picked up a box and went to the checkout line with nothing else. I hoped the cashier didn’t think I was weird, Then I drove back for 20 minutes.

I busted open the box as I got home. And even though I had seen pictures online the size of the wheat pieces was still staggering.

I poured milk into the bowl and watched as the wheat absorbed the milk.

I took the first bite, It was . . . O K. Yea . . . just O K. The wheat was pretty bland but had a strange flavor and went well with the milk.

Honestly, I expected it to be a lot worse. Though an annoying part was having to wait for the milk to break up the wheat in order to eat it – Kinda like a science experiment.

But, It definitely wasn’t good either, It tasted very bland and dry.

All in all, I wouldn’t recommend you buy this cereal unless you enjoy plain wheat a lot. Sorry if you are one of those people.
