What you need to know about “Staycation”

By Mikaela Groncki

Due to all the snowy winter days, Oakmont students now have a “Staycation.” As we all know, our April break has been turned into a week of school without the usual academic rigor. Teachers have put together new course offerings to make sure students have an enjoyable day at school. The students who have to stay will still get a partial vacation, and the students who have travel plans will not be penalized.

The sign-ups for classes were first open to juniors, then sophomores, and last freshmen. With this, many students didn’t get the first choice of their classes, but there were still other options. Seniors are the only ones who get to have a vacation no matter what.

Some of the fun classes you can take involve going outside. They include things like hiking, playing games, fishing, meditating, and doing science experiments. Students will have a very fun time unwinding with a little nature.

Other courses in the technology, engineering, design, and art department have options that let those students who are currently taking the class to work on projects. They have extra time to work on things they need to get done using the resources in school.

Math, English, science, business, health/fitness, social studies, and world languages are some normal classes that go outside of the curriculum and explore other topics within the subject. This gives the teacher opportunities to go over and teach cool subjects they are interested in.

Another change, along with the different classes to take, is the timing of the schedule. We will have shorter classes and longer lunches and passing periods. Classes will be seventy-two minutes long and passing time will be five minutes.
