Oakmont’s NHS inducts 40 students

By Dani Lewis

Oakmont’s National Honor Society inducted 40 new students on the night of Wednesday, September 27th, in the auditorium. Mrs. Stefanakos, the NHS advisor and also English teacher, organized the applications, acceptance letters, and lastly the induction event.

Inductees filed into the first four center rows of the auditorium, and present members sat in the front rows in the right and left wings. Parents and honored guests filled the rest of the seats. Nervousness fluttered through the room.

Mrs. Stef opened the night with an inspirational speech. Following her, Vice Principal Cote, on behalf of Principal Lizotte (who unfortunately couldn’t make it), further congratulated the students and spoke of his special appreciation of this annual event..

Next, the NHS President, Maddie Davison, gave her own speech on the importance of Knowledge. She strolled over to the table at the front of the stage and lit the central candle there. There were four others waiting to be lit, representing the four pillars of the National Honor Society.

One by one, current NHS seniors delivered brief yet inspirational speeches for the pillars of Character, Scholarship, Leadership, and Service: Hydeia Hamilton, Sara Curran, Dani Lewis, and Lucas Vilas-Boas Oliveira, respectively. Each member lit their pillar’s candle until all were glowing and illuminated.

Next, the highlight of the night was upon everyone. Inductees, listed alphabetically, traveled to the stage as Mrs. Stef read a brief introduction to each and the audience cheered. Upon meeting Mr. Cote and Vice Principal Buswell, the inductees shook their hands and were presented with gold National Honor Society pins – pins that will go on their graduation gown. Then they walked to the podium to honor a chosen person in their life.

Inductees had been asked to honor and invite someone other than their parents, so many teachers, grandparents, and even friends were in the crowd. Mr. Jones, Technology teacher, and Mr. Ethier, social studies teacher, Mr. Brunelle math teacher and track coach, and Mr. Nevard, English teacher were among the acknowledged guests. Every speech was touching.

After every speech was finished, students and loved ones headed to the cafeteria to enjoy refreshments and to chat about the evening.

There is no doubt the new National Honor Society members will contribute greatly to Oakmont’s chapter. The present members and Mrs. Stefanakos are looking forward to working with them.

Congratulations to The 2023-2024 Oakmont National Society Inductees:
